The newly reworked dress. (Click for a bigger picture.) I lost
almost 30 pounds from the time this dress was made, necessitating it be
taken in a few inches. I removed the back lacings since I didn't like them
anyway, and put in side lacings instead (much easier to make adjustments
to fit that way; nobody needs side lacings to be perfectly taut, whereas
back lacings need to meet or, to my eyes, it looks a bit weird). I put in
some light boning to the side lacing seams, to help reduce the bunching
one sees with lacing (that's why there were so many rings in the back to
begin with -- less bunching).

The dress' new back view. (Click for a bigger picture.) I think
it looks much nicer this way. I'm also wearing a better chemise than the
one originally pictured, which had a round neckline -- I've discovered
that a square neckline looks much nicer with these dresses.

 This is from Period
Patterns #41, view IV (the one on the lower right). I didn't slash my
sleeves, but otherwise, I did what it said to do.
Assessment: Very easy pattern to
assemble and sew. Very easy directions. I was very nervous about trying
another Period Patterns, but I have to admit this one was easily as easy
as anything out of Simplicity.
Yardage: About 7 yards of 60"
linen/cotton mix, 2 yards of lining fabric (I used cotton broadcloth), 3-5
yards of green trim (very narrow teal ribbon on a spool). About 20 1/2"
copper rings, available from Calico Corners for 5cents each), silver
aiglets for the lacing tips, and about 2 yards of cotton cording from
Grannd Garb. Oh, and 6 hooks & eyes for the sleeve tops.
The chemise in the older pictures
is made with 100% cotton broadcloth, with a circular neckline and a deep
pleat in the underarm seam (which you can't see.) The newer chemise
pictured is a simple drawstring raglan-sleeve affair, found at Reconstructing History and
extremely easy to make.
